Cebuano Beginner’s (6 Weeks) by Jhaela Manahan


Cebuano 101 

The Cebuano language is used by almost thirty percent (30%) of the Philippine population, who are mostly situated in Visayas and Mindanao. Learning the basic ways of communicating in Sugbuanon is beneficial to  someone who is planning on traveling or even staying in Cebu and other provinces that use it as a vernacular. In this 6-week course, participants will be exposed to commonly used expressions, conversational sentence patterns, and basic Cebuano words among others.


By the end of taking this course, participants are expected to have a general idea of the uniqueness of the Cebuano language and are expected to be able engage in basic conversation and construct simple sentences that are useful and timely.

This 6 sessions course will cover basic vocabulary words, everyday expressions, dialogues, common questions and daily greetings for the proper time of the day in  Cebuano language. One will learn and practice essential conversational sentences as accurately as possible as they are used in different contexts such as pointing objects as necessary and locating and showing directions.

Cebuano 101 covers the following topic.

Week 1: Maayong buntag, higala! 

Learn the basic ways of greeting in Cebuano and vocabulary used to name the time of the day.

Week 2: Kumusta, bay? Dayun lang. 

Learn ways how to welcome people into your home or how to respond in the same situation.

Week 3: Otap kana. Danggit kini.

Learn Visayan demonstrative words that help you point to specific objects.

Week 4: Taga-Sugbo ako. 

Learn how to tell where you are and ask about someone’s location.

Week 5: Unsa na? 

Learn the question words and how to use them appropriately.

Week 6: Usa, Duha, Tulo, Ready na mo?

Learn to count, name the year, days and seasons in the vernacular.

Jhaela’s roots can be traced back to Cebu and Lanao Del Norte where Cebuano is used as a vernacular. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in the University of the Philippines  Cebu College. She is TESOL and CTEYL certified. She also has a post graduate diploma in Early Childhood Education. She is currently residing in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam teaching as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher for preschoolers, primary, secondary and university students. She has been teaching for 18 years. Her life principles drive her to create an engaging, productive and memorable class experience for her students.
